Despite achieving significant success on the international stage, Daaman Jamwal, a renowned athlete from Himachal Pradesh, is deeply disheartened by the state government’s outdated and inadequate sports policy.
Daaman, who has proudly represented India and secured a medal at the international level, is facing immense challenges in securing a well-deserved job within the state—challenges that stem directly from the state government’s failure to update its sports policy.
The current criteria for the selection of outstanding sportspersons eligible for employment in government departments, boards, corporations, and universities in Himachal Pradesh have not been revised since 2011.
This stagnant policy overlooks the achievements of many athletes who have excelled in prestigious international championships recognized by global sports federations. Daaman Jamwal’s silver medal in a championship organized by the South Asian Karate Federation, which is an affiliated member of the Asian Karate Federation and duly recognized by the World Karate Federation, is one such accomplishment that has been disregarded under the current policy.
“The government’s indifference towards athletes like me, who have worked tirelessly to bring laurels to our state, is truly disheartening,” said Daaman Jamwal. “The sports policy, which has remained unamended for over a decade, fails to recognize the evolving nature of sports and the achievements of athletes in globally recognized championships.
This outdated approach is a clear indication of the lack of interest and support from our government ministers and officials, who seem to be completely disconnected from the needs and aspirations of the athletes within the state.”
Daaman further expressed that this neglect is not just a personal setback but a significant blow to the morale and future of all aspiring athletes in Himachal Pradesh. “The fact that our policymakers have not even considered amending the criteria to include international championships recognized by world federations is a testament to their ineffectiveness and disregard for the sports community,” he added.

This pressing issue highlights the urgent need for the Himachal Pradesh government to reassess and update its sports policy to reflect the achievements of all athletes, not just those who participate in a limited number of events. The failure to do so will continue to undermine the efforts of athletes who have represented the state and the country with pride and honor.
The sports community and supporters of Daaman Jamwal are calling on the state government to take immediate action to amend the sports policy, ensuring that it is inclusive and representative of all major sporting achievements. This change is crucial not only for Daaman’s career but also for the future of sports in Himachal Pradesh.
