Indian cinema achieved a historic milestone as “All We Imagine As Light,” directed by Payal Kapadia, won the Grand Prix award at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival. The Grand Prix is the festival’s second-most prestigious award after the Palme d’Or. This accolade marks the first time an Indian film has won the Grand Prix at Cannes.

Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon, “All We Imagine As Light” premiered on May 23, 2024, in the festival’s highly-regarded competition section. It was the first Indian film to be featured in the main segment in 30 years, following Shaji N Karun’s “Swaham” in 1994.

Written and directed by Payal Kapadia, the film follows the lives of two nurses from Kerala, Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and Anu (Divya Prabha), who work at a Mumbai hospital and share an apartment. The plot unfolds as Prabha’s life is disrupted by an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, while her roommate Anu struggles to find private moments with her boyfriend in the crowded city. A trip to a coastal town brings significant changes to their lives.

This is Payal Kapadia’s third appearance at Cannes. Her short film “Afternoon Clouds” was featured in the Cinefondation section in 2017, and her documentary “A Night of Knowing Nothing” won the Oeil d’Or (Golden Eye) Award for Best Documentary Film in 2021.
