Vijay Uppal, Satish Sharma receive Lifetime Achievement Awards; Abhinav Kaundal, Rohit Gupta and Dr Aditi Chauhan recognised for emerging talent
MANDI: The Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) celebrated excellence in engineering and architecture during its 2024 annual awards ceremony held in Shimla where distinguished professionals in the fields of construction and design were recognised for their significant contributions to the industry.
Prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards
At the event, renowned architect Vijay Uppal and accomplished engineer Satish Sagar Sharma were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards. These prestigious awards highlighted their lifelong dedication to innovative designs and impactful engineering projects that have shaped the region’s infrastructure.
Emerging Talent in Architecture and Engineering
The ceremony also spotlighted emerging professionals making significant strides in their fields. Architect Abhinav Kaundal was named the Emerging Architect, while Rohit Gupta took home the Emerging Engineer Award for their outstanding contributions to new architectural and engineering advancements.

Young Concrete Technologist Award
In recognition of her pioneering work in concrete technology, Aditi Chauhan was awarded the Young Concrete Technologist Award. Her research and innovation in concrete materials have contributed to the advancement of sustainable and resilient construction practices.
NHPC Parvati Project Honoured for Infrastructure
The NHPC Parvati Project’s Head Race Tunnel (HRT) received the Infrastructure Award in acknowledgment of its excellence in infrastructure development. This project has been vital in enhancing the region’s hydropower capabilities, reflecting cutting-edge engineering achievements.
Industry leaders emphasise sustainable development
Dr Shrikant Baldi, Chairman of Himachal Pradesh Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), was the chief guest at the event. In his keynote address, Dr Baldi emphasised the critical need for sustainable development, especially in hilly regions like Himachal Pradesh. He warned that failing to plan cities with sustainable strategies could have disastrous effects, which were already seen during the extreme weather events of the 2023 monsoon.
Dr. Baldi’s wife, Uma Baldi, a well-known social worker with over three decades of service in the region, also attended the event, further elevating its significance.

Indian Concrete Institute’s Vision and Mission
Speaking on the occasion, VPS Jaswal, President of ICI-Shimla Chapter, underlined the important role of the Indian Concrete Institute. “ICI is a non-profit organization dedicated to spreading knowledge about concrete and promoting concrete technology and construction. We are committed to fostering research and innovation in this field,” Jaswal said.
He highlighted the organization’s efforts to organize seminars, workshops, conferences, and exhibitions at both national and international levels. These events provide a platform for engineers, architects, manufacturers, consultants, and researchers to collaborate, share knowledge, and discuss global trends in concrete technology.

The recipients of the awards were selected by an esteemed jury led by former Engineer-in-Chief Ajay Gupta. Other members of the selection panel included prominent figures like Architect VPS Jaswal, President of ICI Shimla Chapter, Architect Nand Lal Chandel, Vice President of ICI Shimla Chapter, and Dr Pradeep Kumar, Associate Professor at NIT Hamirpur. Their collective expertise ensured that the most deserving candidates were chosen for these prestigious awards.
The 2024 ICI awards once again underscore the importance of recognizing talent and innovation in the fields of engineering and architecture, while also promoting sustainability in construction practices for the future.
