Says after introduction of Angineer scheme, youths not coming forward to join Army
Shahpur: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Monday (May 27, 2024) addressed a huge gathering at Chambi ground in Kangra district’s Shahpur, emphasising the distinct tradition and culture of Himachal Pradesh and her family’s longstanding commitment to serving the people of the state.
Priyanka targeted the Narendra Modi government over its “flawed” Agniveer policy, which was finding no takers among the unemployed youth. Incidentally, a large number of youths from Kangra and its neighbouring districts aspire to the join the Army in various positions. She alleged that the central government was least bothered about providing jobs to the unemployed youth.
“Over the past decade, the BJP has used religion to gain power, prioritising wealth and influence over public welfare. In contrast, she asserted, the Congress was dedicated to solving problems of people, not creating them,” she said.
The Congress leader also criticised PM Modi for doing little to help Himachal when it was reeling under the worst-ever rain devastation in 2023. “Himachal hadn’t seen such a tragedy in 100 years. But Modiji, which calls Himachal his second home, didn’t visit the state even once.
No help came from the Centre despite several requests being made by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu,” she said. On the other hand, she said. Congress workers, the Chief Minister and his entire cabinet were on the ground helping people for a week, contrasting this with the BJP’s alleged inaction.
Priyanka stressed the humility of Chief Minister Sukhu, saying he belonged to a common family, which showcased the Congress’ connection with the everyday struggles of the people. She also targeted the BJP leadership for trying to topple a democratically elected government in Himachal by allegedly purchasing MLAs.
“The coldness to the rain devastation and the bid to topple the Congress government are two such events in two years that prove how opportunistic the BJP leadership is,” she said.
