In Himachal Pradesh’s tribal district Kinnaur, a man opened fire at his two sisters and a niece, causing serious injuries to all three women.
After receiving initial medical treatment in Kinnaur’s Rekong Peo hospital, they were subsequently referred to IGMC-Shimla. The police have arrested the accused, Raj Chandra (62), and his wife Chandrabhagati Negi, and have initiated further legal proceedings. The police have also confiscated the double-barreled gun used by the accused in the shooting. Forensic experts have been summoned to the scene at Purbani village by the Kinnaur police to gather evidence.
A dispute reportedly arose between the two parties regarding a domestic wedding ceremony during which the accused of Purbani village, opened fire. This resulted in injuries to the accused’s sisters, Devi Negi (60), Krishna Leela (64) and niece Sweety (27). Devi sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, Krishna to the stomach and Sweety to the neck.
Upon hearing the gunshots, villagers rushed to the scene and shifted the three injured women to the hospital. Kinnaur SP Srishti Pandey arrived at the scene with a quick response team. Subsequently, the accused bolted himself inside a room, requiring significant police effort to arrest him.
Following the incident, an atmosphere of fear has gripped the village. It is learnt that the families of both the accused and the injured women lived separately at Purbani village and had engaged in altercations earlier too.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised as to why the accused did not surrender his weapon, particularly in light of the nationwide model code of conduct during elections, which mandates the surrender of licensed firearms to ensure peaceful electoral proceedings.
