SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh Police have been training first female buglers of the force, the groundbreaking achievement marking a significant milestone in the department’s commitment towards gender equality and inclusivity.
Presently, three lady constables—Shivani (No. 421), Shweta (No. 507) and Neeshu (No. 528) of 5th Indian Reserve Battalion, Bassi, have been undergoing Basic Bugler Course at the Himachal Pradesh Police Training Centre at Daroh.
More lady constables were showing interest and were expected to join soon, the police said in a statement from the Director General of Police’s office.
“Soon, Himachal Pradesh will have lady buglers in the guard of honour and other ceremonies.
The dignitaries may be surprised to find lady buglers in their guard of honour. Till now, the bugler used to be a male-dominated craft. Playing of a bugle requires a lot of lung power, deep breath and physical and mental control,” the statement read.
Bugle is an important military instrument where the bugle call is used to indicate the daily routines of camp. Historically, the bugle was used in the military to relay instructions from officers to soldiers during battle. They were used to assemble the leaders and to give marching orders to the camps.
Buglers play a vital role in the police force as their bugle calls serve as important signals during ceremonies, parades and other official events. Their melodic tunes evoke a sense of honour, respect and tradition, adding a touch of solemnity and grandeur to these occasions. Bugle is a must when the national flag is raised during sunrise and national flag is lowered during sunset.
The addition of female buglers to the police force not only highlights the department’s dedication to diversity but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring women in law enforcement. This historic moment sends a powerful message that gender should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s passion and achieving professional excellence.
“The Himachal Pradesh Police recognises the importance of representation and believes that diversity strengthens the organization. With first female buglers, the department takes a significant step towards breaking gender stereotypes and fostering an inclusive culture that values and celebrates the contributions of all its members. It serves as an inspiration to all members of the police force and the community at large,” the statement read.
Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu has congratulated Bimal Gupta, DIG of HPPTC, Daroh, for this initiative and “breaking the glass ceiling”.
