Shimla: Himachal’s former minister Ram Lal Markanda arrived in Shimla on Sunday, the day after the announcement of the by-elections, stating that he is a BJP worker and will contest the elections as a party soldier. Markanda will stay in Shimla for a few days and work on the next strategy with senior leaders.
About a year ago, Markanda, while serving as a minister in the Jai Ram government, contested the elections on a BJP ticket from Lahaul-Spiti. He lost the election by a very small margin.
Markanda is also close to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, having been close to him during his student life. He did not reveal his intentions regarding what he would do if Ravi Thakur was given the BJP ticket.
Meanwhile, BJP former minister Veerendra Kanwar has launched a door-to-door campaign under the jan sampark abhiyan to contest the by-elections from Kutlehar. The former minister said that he would contest the elections at all costs. Work for the by-elections will be done as per the orders of the high command.
