Himachali Music Maestro Prof. Battu to Receive Padma Shri Award

Shimla: In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of music, Professor Somdatt Battu from Himachal Pradesh has been selected for the Padma Shri award. The announcement of the Padma awards, comprising 132 honorees, was made on the eve of Republic Day, with 110 individuals receiving the Padma Shri. Among these distinguished personalities is Prof. Somdatt Battu, renowned for his notable contributions to Himachali folk music and classical singing.

Prof. Battu has played a pivotal role in the realms of drama, dance, instrumental music, and vocal performances. His expertise extends to both local and classical genres, and he has garnered acclaim not only in India but also internationally. Recognizing his outstanding contributions, he was previously honored with the ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.’ Prof. Battu, residing in Shimla and associated with the Rajiv Gandhi Degree College, has been a beacon in promoting the cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh.

Born in Jasur, Kangra, the 86-year-old maestro has been instrumental in bringing the rich cultural tapestry of Himachal to the forefront. Apart from receiving the Himachal Gaurav Award in 2016, Prof. Battu was also bestowed with the Punjabi Sangeet Ratna Award in 2015. His illustrious career includes accolades such as the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award,’ the Dr. Jaswant Singh Award, and recognition from prestigious institutions like All India Radio and Doordarshan.

The Padma Shri announcement is a testament to Prof. Somdatt Battu’s enduring dedication to the world of music, reflecting the cultural vibrancy of Himachal Pradesh on a national scale.
