A 53-year-old woman, Anita Kumari, was kept in captivity for several days days by her stepsons, daughters and in-laws after the death of her husband at Dhal village in Jwalamukhi sub-division of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh. The incident came to light when the victim’s sister reached her house and noticed the injuries inflicted on her body.
As the victim’s sister attempted to return home after witnessing the wounds, she was followed by people in vehicles. Seeking refuge in a nearby satsang building, she awaited police intervention. Subsequently, police personnel arrived at the scene and escorted the traumatised woman to the Majheen police post, from where she was taken for medical examination and treatment. She has since been relocated to her maternal home.
Anita became a target of abuse from her stepsons and daughters following her husband’s demise from a severe illness. Her phone was confiscated and she was subjected to physical assault.
The victim’s family members later filed a complaint at the Jwalamukhi police station.
DSP RP Jaswal said that upon receiving information, local police swiftly responded and found Anita at her residence. She was brought to Majheen for medical evaluation, and witnesses were being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
A case has been registered against six family members, including Anita’s stepson Sandeep, daughters Pooja and Trishala, son-in-law Praveen Rana and others, Ravindra Kumar and Deshraj, under various sections of the IPC pertaining to assault and altercation.
