Himachal weather: Woman dies after being hit by falling stones in Chamba; two-day yellow alert for heavy rain

A woman was killed after being struck by falling stones from a hill while en route to the historic Khundi Jatra in Chamba district. Subhadra Devi’s body was recovered and handed over to her family after a post-mortem examination at Teesa hospital, said Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav.

In a separate tragedy, a young man from Una, who was returning from Manimahesh Yatra, died after being buried under debris on Monday. This even as the Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a yellow alert, predicting heavy rain in some parts of the state for Tuesday (August 20, 2024) and Wednesday.

Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a spate of rain-related accidents as the monsoon rain continues to batter the region.

The situation in Mandi city has highlighted the inadequacies of the Municipal Corporation’s preparations for the monsoon. Several homes were inundated as rainwater breached their thresholds.

The city’s connecting roads are in poor condition. Overnight rain filled the city’s drains with debris, which spilled onto the roads, disrupting traffic. In Ravinagar, residents were forced to wake up at 4 am to create pathways for water drainage.

Kangra district is also suffering heavily, with 16 houses reported to have collapsed due to incessant rains. A major water crisis has emerged in Dharamshala after the main source of the city’s drinking water scheme at Gajj Khud was washed away. The landslides have further isolated the region as vehicle movement is severely affected.

A landslide at Boileauganj crossing in Shimla has forced the authorities to reroute traffic, while another slide in Devnagar buried a vehicle under debris, causing further disruption. The Mandi-Kullu road was closed on Tuesday morning near Char Mile between Mandi-Pandoh due to falling debris. However, authorities have since restored the route for traffic.
