Himachal weather update: Temp declines as higher reaches receive fresh snowfall; orchardists worry for stone fruit crop

A western disturbance has again brought fresh snowfall in higher-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh while other parts received rain, leading to a sharp drop in temperature across the state.
According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), unfavourable weather conditions are expected to persist in most parts of the state on Wednesday (March 13, 2024), with forecast indicating continued snowfall in higher areas and rain in lower parts. Additionally, a yellow alert for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall has been issued for select locations.
The IMD reported a staggering 119 per cent increase in rainfall compared to normal levels during the first 12 days of March. The deluge has been particularly intense in various districts, with Sirmaur experiencing a whopping 282 per cent rise, Kullu at 182 per cent, Bilaspur at 160 per cent and Shimla witnessing a 154 per cent surge in precipitation.
From March 1 to 12, the state has recorded 99 mm of rainfall, significantly surpassing the usual 45.2 mm for the same period. The weather agency forecasts the possibility of light rain and snowfall in certain high and medium altitude areas tomorrow as well. However, a respite is anticipated with clearing skies across the state from March 15 onwards.
The recent downpour has inundated several parts, including Chamba, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Mandi and Sirmaur. Hailstorms have also been reported in numerous areas. Fresh snow has been spotted on the peaks of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts, with Rohtang Pass accumulating 40 cm of snow, followed by 20 cm in Koksar, 15 cm in Sisu, 14 cm in Atal Tunnel North Portal and 12 cm in Gondhala.
As March’s inclement weather persists, concerns among orchardists escalate, particularly for stone fruit growers. With plum, apricot, almond, and peach trees currently in bloom across lower-altitude areas, clear weather is imperative to safeguard the delicate blossoms and ensure a fruitful harvest season.
