SHIMLA: Several parts in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh woke up to a white mantle of snow on Wednesday (January 31, 2024) amid an orange alert for rain and snowfall predicted for Wednesday and Thursday.

The higher reaches of Himachal are now cloaked in snow, with Charabra near Shimla and Narkanda in Shimla, along with Keylong in Lahaul, experiencing snowfall. In the aftermath of the first snowfall of the new year, the Shimla-Rampur highway has been closed due to traffic.

Kharapathar near Rohru has witnessed three inches of snow, leaving approximately 12 HRTC and private buses stranded near Fagu. Following the snowfall in the tribal area of Pangi, residents find themselves confined indoors, while farmers and orchardists have welcomed the precipitation as a boon for their livelihood.

The snowfall also blanketed Rohtang Pass, Atal Tunnel, Manali, Keylong, Dalhousie and Pangi-Bharmour. The hills of Dhauladhar in Kangra received a fresh coat of snow.

An orange alert for heavy rain and snowfall remains in effect for most areas of the state through Wednesday and Thursday. A change in the weather pattern is anticipated with the activation of a western disturbance from Tuesday night onwards. While clear conditions are expected on February 2, a yellow alert has been reissued for rain and snowfall on February 3 and 4.
