Himachal weather update: 4 national highways, 404 other roads blocked across state, fresh western disturbance to bring more rain, snow from March 11-13

As many as four national highways and 404 other roads are blocked in Himachal Pradesh following the recent snowfall experienced in the higher reaches of the state. The maximum 286 roads are blocked in tribal Lahaul-Spiti district, followed by 51 in Chamba, 24 each in Kinnaur and Kullu, 21 in Shimla, two in Mandi and one in Kangra district.

Six hundred thirty-nine power transformers are out of service across the state, the maximum 212 in Lahaul-Spiti, followed by 201 in Kinnaur, 165 in Chamba, 59 in Shimla and one each in Kullu and Mandi districts. Twenty-two water supply schemes have been affected, of which 19 are in Shimla and the remaining three in Lahaul-Spiti.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, there is probability of adverse weather in some high-altitude areas of Himachal even on Thursday (March 7, 2024).

The weather is expected to clear up in the entire state on March 8 and 9 even as a fresh western disturbance is likely to get active in Himachal from the night of March 10. Due to its effect, there may be rain and snowfall in parts of the state from March 11 to 13. During this period, a yellow alert has been issued regarding thunderstorms and lightning at some places.

In Lahaul-Spiti, the BRO and the Public Works Department have intensified efforts for the restoration of roads. But the threat of avalanches has been proving to be a challenge for the workers. If the weather remains clear for two days, 50 per cent of the closed roads in Lahaul are expected to be opened.

The minimum temperature in various place stood at: Shimla 4.1 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar 7.1, Bhuntar 6.2, Narkanda 0.5, Kalpa -1.6, Una 6.5, Nahan 8.9, Palampur 5, Solan 5, Manali 2.6, Kangra 8.4, Mandi 7.3, Bilaspur 8.4, Chamba 9.8, Dharamshala 8.3, Dalhousie 3.2, Jubbarhatti 6.9, Kufri 2.7, Kukumseri -6.8, Bharmour 3.5, Reckongpeo 1.5, Dhaulakuan 9.3, Barthin 6.8, Paonta Sahib 11, Sarahan 3.5 and Dehragopipur 11.0 degrees Celsius.
