Heavy rains have been wreaking havoc across Himachal Pradesh, leading to tragic incidents and significant disruption.
A woman, Subhadra Devi, from Kokda village in Chamba district, lost her life after being struck by a falling stone while en route to the historic Khundi Maraal Jatra fair. The incident occurred near Riyali as she was travelling with other villagers via Chanju. The stone impact caused her to fall into a drain, leading to her death.
In Mandi district, a 73-year-old retired SDO died after slipping into a drain at Old Mandi as heavy rains lashed the area on Tuesday morning. Mandi recorded 103 mm of rainfall on Monday night, with Sundernagar receiving 50 mm, Kangra 49 mm and Palampur 32 mm.

The relentless rain caused a slate-roofed house to collapse in Ladbhadol area while debris and water entered several houses and buildings under the Mandi Municipal Corporation. Streets in Mandi’s Suhra locality turned into drains, forcing residents to stay awake through the night.
Kullu district also experienced continuous rain from Monday evening to Tuesday morning, bringing much-needed relief to farmers and gardeners. However, the downpour led to significant traffic disruptions, with vehicle movement halted on 75 roads across the state, including Mandi-Jalandhar via Kotli and the Shillai-Paonta NH, which faced repeated closures on Tuesday.
Despite the rain, the weather cleared up on Tuesday, particularly in the capital Shimla, though traffic disruptions persisted near the Baluganj crossing. The forecast predicts more rain on Wednesday, with a brief respite expected from August 22 to 24, before rain returns on August 25 and 26.
