Himachal weather: 84% rain deficit, drought-like conditions in some parts of state

Himachal Pradesh is facing severe rainfall deficiency, with an 84 per cent deficit recorded from July 8 to 15. The state has received only 9.4 mm of rain during the period, compared to the normal average of 58.9 mm, according to the Meteorological Department. The situation has led to drought-like conditions in several areas, severely impacting agriculture and raising temperatures.
The districts of Shimla, Bilaspur, Una and Lahaul-Spiti have been the hardest hit by the lack of rainfall. The overall monsoon season, up to July 15, has seen a 37 per cent deficit in rainfall, with only 133.1 mm recorded against the usual 211.5 mm. The shortage has begun to affect apple orchards and crops such as maize, capsicum and tomatoes, particularly in regions without irrigation systems.
Farmers are reporting stunted growth in apple size due to the insufficient moisture. The drought conditions are also impacting other crops, further complicating the situation for the agricultural community. The lack of rain has resulted in a significant rise in temperatures across the state, with several areas experiencing temperatures 5 degrees above normal.
Hamirpur has seen the highest temperature rise, with a maximum temperature of 36.1 degrees Celsius, 4.7 degrees above normal. Una recorded the highest temperature in the state at 37.4 degrees Celsius. Other notable increases include Bhuntar at 34.5 degrees (4.6 degrees above normal), Bilaspur at 36.1 degrees (3.7 degrees above normal), Manali at 28.4 degrees (2.9 degrees above normal), and Solan at 31.4 degrees (2.9 degrees above normal). The overall maximum temperature in the state is currently 2.5 degrees above the average.
However, there may be some relief on the horizon. The Meteorological Department has forecast that the monsoon will become active in Himachal Pradesh for two days starting tomorrow. Rain is expected in most parts of the state on July 17 and 18. Over the past week, light rain has been recorded in some areas, providing a glimmer of hope for the parched land and stressed farmers.
