The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain across various parts of Himachal Pradesh, warning of potential hazards from Saturday (August 17) until August 23.
In response, local authorities have urged residents and tourists to stay away from rivers and streams where rising water levels could pose serious risks. The alert comes as the state continues to experience intense rainfall, leading to road closures and significant damage in several regions.
The torrential rain that lashed the state throughout Friday night has resulted in severe disruptions, with Nainadevi recording the highest rainfall at 108.2 mm, followed by Hamirpur at 76 mm and Palampur at 68 mm. A cloudburst occurred at Taklech in Rampur subdivision of Shimla district.

Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 16.9 degrees Celsius, while other key locations like Sundernagar, Kalpa, Dharamshala and Manali saw temperatures ranging from 12.5 to 24.7 degrees Celsius.
Road closures due to landslides
The heavy downpour has caused multiple road closures, adding to the challenges faced by residents and travellers. The constant closure of NH-5 near Nigulsari has become a significant inconvenience, particularly after a 50-metre section of the road collapsed on Friday, completely cutting off the route.
In another incident, a landslide near Dhundi has rendered the Manali-Leh highway impassable. Vehicles have been halted at Solang Nullah and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has deployed machinery to restore access. Manali SDM Raman Kumar Sharma has advised commuters to exercise caution, although emergency vehicles are being allowed to pass.
In Palampur subdivision, the collapse of a culvert near the new vegetable market has led to the closure of the main road. As a result, people are now forced to use the connecting road via Rajpur and Kalu Di Hatti to travel between Palampur and Baijnath. However, the detour has caused significant traffic jams, increasing the difficulties of the commuters.
