It has been snowing since morning in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh. Losar in tribal Lahaul-Spiti district and Atal Tunnel in Rohtang have received about 5 inches of fresh snow.
Kunjum Pass, Baralacha have received 6 inches of fresh snow till 12 noon while light snowfall is being experienced in the higher-altitude areas of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu and Chamba’s Pangi and Bharmour. The weather has changed in Shimla as well and the sky has been overcast since morning.
With a fresh western disturbance getting active over Himachal, the weather will remain adverse for the next five days in the state.
Director of Meteorological Centre, Shimla, Surendra Pal said that a red alert for heavy snowfall had been issued in some high-altitude areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu districts while in higher reaches of Shimla, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur districts, moderate snowfall may be seen over the next three days.
The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy snowfall on January 12 and 13 in Teesa and Bhatiyat of Chamba as well. Heavy snowfall may occur in the higher reaches of Kangra on January 13 while the same weather pattern may prevail over the higher reaches of Shimla, Mandi and Sirmaur districts on January 12.
The weatherman has also issued an advisory asking tourists and locals to take precautions during red and yellow alert days and avoid travel on slippery roads. The government has asked people not to venture out for trekking in bad weather, especially in high-altitude areas.
