Himachal weather: 2-day orange alert for heavy rain in state, five districts put on alert tomorrow

An orange alert has been issued for heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh for Wednesday (July 31, 2024) and Thursday, signaling potential danger and urging residents and tourists to exercise caution.
There is a specific warning for the districts of Una, Kangra and Sirmaur for Wednesday while for Thursday, heavy rain has been forecast particularly in the districts of Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Shimla and Sirmaur. The intense rainfall may trigger landslides and flashfloods in these areas, posing significant risks to life and property.
The monsoon has been active in the state for the past three days, bringing substantial rainfall to most regions on July 29. On Monday/Tuesday night, cloudbursts occurred in two locations in Kullu district and one in Kinnaur, causing extensive damage.
This monsoon season, the state has experienced 36 per cent less rainfall, with no district receiving more than its usual rainfall quota. From June 1 to July 30, the normal rainfall is 348.6 mm, but this year only 224.4 mm has been received.
The heavy rainfall has led to severe destruction, with government and private property losses amounting to Rs 433 crore. Nineteen houses have been completely destroyed and 95 others have suffered partial damage. Additionally, one shop, 87 cow shelters and five labour sheds have been damaged.
On August 2, the monsoon is expected to weaken. However, rain is likely to return to most parts of the state on August 4. Authorities are advising everyone in the affected regions to stay vigilant and follow safety measures to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains.
