Himachal weather: 116 roads blocked across state, yellow alert for heavy rain for 5 days

Heavy rains caused widespread disruption across Himachal Pradesh, with landslides blocking vehicular movement on one national highway and 116 roads as of Friday (August 16, 2024) morning.

The most affected areas include the districts of Shimla, Mandi, Kullu and Kangra where the Public Works Department and other agencies are tirelessly working to restore connectivity and essential services.

By 10 am on Friday, 21 electricity transformers were reported out of order and 11 water supply schemes had been disrupted. The situation has left many residents without power and clean water, increasing the challenges posed by the ongoing downpour.

In Devgran area of Kangra district, a section of the road from Palampur to Panchrukhi and Jaisinghpur was washed away by heavy rains. The floodwaters also invaded the courtyard of a nearby house, sweeping away two scooters. In another incident, the platform of the Public Works Department’s rest house in Palampur collapsed due to the rain.

The meteorological department has warned that the weather is expected to remain unfavorable in parts of the state for the next week. The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains from August 16 to 20, cautioning residents of potential hazards.

Thursday night saw rainfall in various parts of the state, with Dalhousie recording the highest 62 mm, followed by Palampur at 56 mm, Kandaghat 36.6 mm and Ghamarur at 35.6 mm. Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 17 degrees Celsius while Sundernagar and Bhuntar registered 22.6 and 22.2 degrees Celsius.
