Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has said that Himachal Pradesh is poised to significantly enhance its tourism sector by developing new air routes and heliports. Recognising the vast potential for tourism in the state, the government is preparing a proposal to establish a new air route connecting Chandigarh, Kullu and Dharamshala.
The initiative aims to increase the movement of tourists between two of the state’s key tourist destinations. Discussions are already underway with relevant airlines and agencies to finalize the details.
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasised that the new direct air service between Kullu and Dharamshala will serve as a major boost to the tourism sector, offering tourists better air travel options. He noted that the government’s comprehensive and inclusive efforts are gradually connecting various tourist spots in the state with other parts of the country through enhanced air services.

Currently, daily flights are available on Delhi-Shimla-Delhi and Shimla-Dharamshala-Shimla routes while flights on the Amritsar-Shimla-Amritsar and Amritsar-Kullu-Amritsar routes operate thrice a week.
In addition to expanding air travel services, the government is also developing new heliports to further improve connectivity. The government has allocated ₹Rs 3 crore for the construction of heliports in Rakkar and Palampur in Kangra district, as well as in Chamba and in Reckong Peo in Kinnaur district.
Given the mountainous terrain of Himachal, these heliports will play a crucial role in attracting tourists and facilitating smoother travel. The Chief Minister highlighted that these heliports will also be vital in providing quick assistance to local residents during emergencies. With this in mind, the state government is working on constructing heliports at all district headquarters.
