Himachal to make drug test mandatory for police job aspirants to keep addicts out, 1,250 posts to be filled

Shimla: Aiming to keep its police force free from drug addiction, the Himachal Pradesh government is likely to make a drug test mandatory for all aspirants of police jobs in the state.
This is the first time that such a stringent measure may be implemented, reflecting the government’s commitment to combating the rising drug menace among the youth.

The state’s Congress-led government under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced the recruitment of 1,250 police constables. The Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission is expected to soon advertise these posts. However, this recruitment drive will be unlike any before, with several new rules being introduced for the first time, including the mandatory dope test.

Warning to Himachal’s youth

For the young men and women of Himachal Pradesh, the message is clear: if you aspire to wear the police uniform, stay away from drugs. Any candidate who fails the dope test will be automatically disqualified from the recruitment process. This tough stance underscores the government’s intent to ensure that only those who are clean both physically and morally are inducted into the police force.

“The introduction of the dope test is a significant step towards ensuring that the police force remains free of drug addiction, which has become a growing problem among the youth in the state,” a senior police officer remarked.

New rules, raised women’s quota

The upcoming police recruitment will see other changes as well. The quota for women has been increased to 30 per cent, encouraging greater female participation in the force. Additionally, a 100-metre race has been included in the physical test, another first for the state. But the most crucial change remains the implementation of the dope test, which is seen as a critical component of the government’s war against drugs.

The physical tests will be conducted by the police department, while the recruitment examination will be handled by the Public Service Commission. Besides the dope test, the police will also carry out a thorough verification of character certificates to ensure that only candidates with impeccable records are selected.

Bid to check growing drug menace

This decision comes in response to an alarming rise in drug addiction among the youth in Himachal Pradesh. The state’s youth are increasingly falling prey to dangerous substances like chitta (a form of synthetic drug), which has infiltrated even remote rural areas. The drug problem has only worsened over the years, with local smugglers now in contact with inter-state or even international drug networks.
