BADDI: In a remarkable display of compassion and community spirit, Hansraj Chandel, a social worker in Doon Assembly constituency of Solan district in Himachal Pradesh, has stepped forward to assist about 300 families affected by the recent rain disaster.
Chandel has provided a financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to each affected family, which amounts to around Rs 15 lakh, along with distributing essential ration supplies and tarpaulins door-to-door from his personal funds. The operation, he says, aims to help those who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to the calamity.
Speaking about his efforts, he emphasised that several families in the area have been rendered homeless, with vital roads in panchayats severely damaged. To understand the dire circumstances of the affected families, he personally visited their homes, offering support and pledging his continued assistance in their time of need.
Chandel has also announced his support for the marriages of two orphan girls, Kiranlata from Rampur village in Bughar Kanaita, and Hema from Kharsi village in Ganguli panchayat. A retired patwari, he says he would spend the entire amount that he received as pension over the past five years on the two weddings.
Furthermore, he is also actively involved in the restoration of connectivity of roads in 19 panchayats that were severely damaged by rain. He is spearheading the ‘road open campaign’, engaging local residents in the effort to rebuild and reconnect their communities.
