In a groundbreaking initiative to promote literacy and provide educational resources, the Mandi district administration in Himachal Pradesh is set to launch the ‘Apna Pustakalaya’ (Our Library) programme during the International Shivratri Festival from February 27 to March 5.

The unique initiative invites people to donate literature and competitive exam-related books, which will be made available in public libraries being set up across Mandi district.

To facilitate donations, a dedicated kiosk will be set up at Indira Market, where individuals can contribute their books.

Speaking about the initiative, Mandi SDM Om Kant Thakur said, “This is a golden opportunity for the people of Mandi to contribute to society by donating books. A single book can shape a student’s future. We urge everyone to come forward and support this cause.”

Public libraries to be inaugurated by CM

Under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan, the district administration has undertaken the ambitious task of establishing libraries in DCH subdivisions of the district.

The first of these libraries, located in Karsog, is nearing completion and is set to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Built within the premises of the upcoming Mini Secretariat, this library is being developed at a cost of Rs 20 lakh and will accommodate around 100 readers.

The library will initially house 2,500 books, with plans to expand the collection to 5,000 in the coming months.

Easy book donation & home collection service

In addition to the Indira Market kiosk, the administration has also introduced a home collection service for donors unable to visit the kiosk.

Interested donors can scan a QR code to request a book pickup. Monetary donations are also welcomed to help purchase new books.

“We want to ensure that no student is deprived of knowledge due to a lack of resources. This initiative is a step towards creating a well-informed and literate society,” SDM Thakur said.

The district administration has urged donors to contribute books that are in good condition and relevant to current academic needs. Old textbooks, damaged books and competitive exam books older than three years are discouraged.

This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to education and community development, providing young minds with valuable resources and fostering a culture of reading across Mandi district.
