The Newz Radar

SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh is currently in the grip of an extreme cold wave, with temperatures plummeting below normal levels. At five locations, the mercury has dipped below zero.

Sundernagar recorded a temperature of -0.2 degrees Celsius, Bhuntar -0.5 degrees, Kalpa -2 degrees, Mandi -0.4 degrees and Samdho -6.2 degrees. Reckongpeo is also hovering near zero, registering a minimum temperature of 0.4 degrees. Una recorded a minimum of 1.8 degrees, while Narkanda stands at 1.1 degrees Celsius.

The bone-chilling temperatures have been further compounded by dense fog engulfing several places, including Mandi, Bilaspur, Una, Kangra, Paonta Sahib, Dhaula Kuan in Sirmaur and Baddi and Nalagarh in Solan district. The weather department has forecast light rain and snowfall in the state on January 9 and 10, providing some respite to the cold-stricken residents.

Despite the freezing conditions, daytime temperatures in several areas remain higher than usual. Shimla, Sundernagar, Bhuntar, Kalpa, Dharamshala and Kangra are experiencing maximum temperatures above normal levels. In the last 24 hours, Shimla recorded a maximum of 14.4 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar 20.6 degrees, Bhuntar 20.7 degrees, Kalpa 10.2 degrees, Dharamshala 19 degrees and Una 19.6 degrees.
However, a notable drop of 2 degrees has been observed in the temperature in Dalhousie, reaching 10 degrees. Kukumseri recorded 9.3 degrees, Narkanda 10.9 degrees, Reckongpeo 15.2 degrees and Samdho at 8.9 degrees. As the cold wave persists, residents brace themselves for the predicted precipitation, hoping for relief from the biting cold that has gripped the region.
