SHIMLA: A fresh western disturbance is set to become active starting January 30 in Himachal Pradesh, potentially bringing rain and snowfall across the state.
In anticipation of this weather system, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorm and lightening on January 30 and heavy rain, snow, thunderstorm and lightening at isolated places on January 31. Additionally, another western disturbance is forecasted to take effect on February 3, likely resulting in widespread rain and snowfall on both February 3 and 4.
Over the past 24 hours, temperatures have dropped across the state, dipping below normal levels in numerous locations. Shimla, experiencing a 2 degrees decline, recorded a minimum temperature of 3.8 degrees Celsius. Similarly, minimum temperatures were registered at 2.7 degrees in Sundernagar, 3.4 degrees in Bhuntar, -2.2 degrees in Kalpa, 6.2 degrees in Dharamshala, 3.6 degrees in Una, 2.3 degrees in Manali and 3.1 degrees in Mandi.
Dalhousie saw a minimum temperature of 3.8 degrees, Kufri at 0.9 degrees, Kukumseri at -7.6 degrees, Narkanda at -0.4 degrees, Reckongpeo at 0.9 degrees and Samdho at -3.4 degrees Celsius.
A decrease in daytime temperatures has also been observed across most regions. Shimla recorded a maximum temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius, while Sundernagar reached 21.5 degrees, Bhuntar at 18 degrees and Kalpa at 9.9 degrees. Manali experienced a maximum of 13.7 degrees, Dharamshala 19 degrees and Una 20.8 degrees Celsius.
“A fresh western disturbance as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies at 5.8 km above mean sea level now runs roughly along longitude 55°E to the north of latitude 32°N. A cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Rajasthan and adjoining Punjab and Haryana and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Northwest India from January 30 and another from February 3, 2024,” the weather department said in its morning update.
