Himachal Pradesh weather update: Low-lying Solan, Sundernagar colder than Shimla; Samdho in Lahaul freezes at -7.1°C

SHIMLA: Low-lying areas in Himachal Pradesh have been experiencing more bone-chilling temperatures than their mountainous counterparts. Una witnessed the mercury plummeting to a frigid 11.6 degrees Celsius, highlighting the severity of the cold wave gripping the region.
The peculiar weather phenomenon can be attributed to dense fog and mist that has enveloped the lower areas, causing temperatures to dip further. Notably, other low-lying regions like Solan and Kangra also experienced a significant drop in temperature in the last 24 hours.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert, warning of heavy mist and fog persisting in the low-lying areas for the next four days. Additionally, the state braces for potentially adverse weather conditions on January 8, with forecasts indicating the likelihood of rain in mid-altitude area and light snowfall in higher altitudes.
Una bore the brunt of the cold wave, with its maximum temperature plummeting by 1.4 degrees in the last day alone. Similarly, Solan saw a drop of 2.5 degrees, reaching 18.5 degrees, while Kangra recorded a temperature of 17.7 degrees after a 1.4-degree decrease. In comparison, the maximum temperature in Shimla stood at 14.6 degrees, Dharamshala at 21 degrees, Keylong at 5.9 degrees and Dalhousie at 12.1 degrees Celsius.
Furthermore, the minimum temperature across the state has witnessed a considerable decline over the past 24 hours. In several areas, the minimum temperature in low-lying regions is even lower than that in the mountains. Shimla reported a minimum temperature of 4.2 degrees, Sundernagar at 1.5 degrees, Bhuntar at 0.5 degrees, Kangra at 3 degrees and Palampur at 1.2 degrees. In Solan, the minimum temperature dropped to 1.4 degrees, while Mandi recorded 1.2 degrees. The lowest temperatures were registered in Kukumseri at -9.1 degrees Celsius and Samdho at -7.1 degrees Celsius.
