Himachal Pradesh Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur has blamed the political guarantees of the current Congress government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, for the financial crisis facing the state.

Jai Ram, a former Chief Minister, said it was the first time in Himachal Pradesh’s history that employees had not received their salaries and pensioners had not received their pension by the third of the month (September 3).

“A serious economic crisis has arisen in the state. The Chief Minister claims there is no crisis and promises to make Himachal a prosperous state by 2027. However, the reality is that the government has become incapable of paying salaries to its employees. The government must take this matter seriously. Himachal is on the verge of bankruptcy and development work in the state has come to a halt,” the BJP leader said.

Jai Ram also criticised the government’s reluctance to address the issue in the Assembly. “We demanded a discussion under Rule 67 inside the Assembly, but the government does not want to discuss it, even though Himachal Pradesh is going through a severe economic crisis,” he said.

Responding to allegations that the central government had not provided sufficient support, Jai Ram clarified that Himachal Pradesh was still receiving the revenue deficit grant from the Centre, with the next instalment expected on September 6. “It has not been stopped.

Apart from this, what other help is needed from the Centre? The Chief Minister should accept that there is an economic crisis in the state. It is not right to keep blaming the Centre all the time,” he said.
