Himachal Pradesh’s celebrated mountaineer, Baljit Kaur, who belongs to Solan, has once again reached the summit of the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest. This climb was undertaken with a powerful message of environmental protection, reflecting her dedication to promoting sustainable living and eco-friendly practices.

Baljit began her rigorous preparations in April, undergoing intense training in the Ladakh Janskar Himalaya range. She successfully climbed Mt UT Ladakh Kangri, standing at 6,070 metres, as part of her month-long practice regimen in India. Following this training, she departed for Nepal to continue her journey.

In Nepal, Baljit first tackled the challenging Mt Labuche East, which rises to 6,119 metres in the Khumbu region and is renowned for its difficult ascent. After conquering this peak, she made her final ascent to the top of Mt Everest, carrying the message of environmental protection.
“I am happy to be the flagbearer of ‘Sustainable is Attainable’ and take the discussion of sustainable living to the top of the world,” Baljit Kaur said, expressing her commitment to sustainability through her campaign.

In 2023, Baljit received the Gold Medal for Excellence in Mountaineering from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. She holds the distinction of being the first Indian to climb seven peaks above 8,000 metres. Additionally, she is the first Indian woman to summit Mt Everest, Mt Lhotse and Mt Manaslu, all without supplemental oxygen.

Baljit’s second ascent of Mount Everest was driven by her vision of a clean and eco-friendly lifestyle and co-existence with nature. Her efforts continue to inspire many, underscoring the importance of environmental stewardship in the world of mountaineering.
