SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh government is in the process of changing rules for the recruitment of Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs).

The state education department has submitted a related proposal to the personnel department and recruitment rules are likely to be changed before the cabinet gives its go-ahead to fill 6,000 new posts of TGTs.

Himachal Education Minister Rohit Thakur gave these instructions during a review meeting of the department. The recruitment rules for TGTs in Himachal, framed in 2012, require 50 per cent marks in graduation for general category candidates while there is a relaxation of 5 per cent for reserved categories.

While implementing the new system in 2019, the NCTE had given the option of 50 per cent marks in post-graduation as well in case candidates didn’t have 50 per cent marks in graduation. This option, however, was not adopted by the Himachal Pradesh government. If it is implemented in Himachal, the general category candidates who do not have 50 per cent marks in graduation will be benefited.

Apart from this, two more amendments have been proposed in recruitment rules. Education Minister Thakur has asked the department to get this process completed soon by the personnel department and the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission and put it up before the cabinet so that fresh TGT recruitments are done as per the new rules.

The Himachal government has sanctioned 6,000 posts in the education department. Most of these are in JBT and TGT. The minister wants that about 2,500 of these posts should be filled first on a batch-wise basis. The formation of a new State Selection Commission is awaited to start the recruitment process, which is why the recruitment rules of TGT will be changed first. The TGT is a big cadre in the state education department and every year around 3,000 teachers retire. This is why the recruitment has to be done every year in this cadre.
