Chamba: The residents of Chamba’s Dalhousie, a constituency once represented by former Education Minister Asha Kumari, have threatened to take to the streets to protest the state government’s failure to appoint teaching staff at Saloni’s Government Model Senior Secondary School.

Concerns about the future of their children’s education have pushed the community’s patience to its limits, prompting them to give the government a one-month ultimatum.

For the past two years, the school in Saloni has operated with only two teachers for Class XI and XII. The staff shortage has reduced the purported model school to a mere formality.

From about 70 students two years ago in science stream, the strength has fallen to six as most others have migrated elsewhere.

The school relies on a single physics and math lecturer to teach both medical and non-medical students.

Many local children are now seeking education in Chamba or Banikhet schools due to insufficient facilities.Desraj, the chairman of the School Management Committee, laments that the approved posts for a chemistry and physics lecturer remain unfilled to date.

“Positions such as a medical lecturer, IP, PET and TGT also are vacant. This prolonged staff shortage over the past two years has jeopardised the educational aspirations of local children to pursue careers in medicine, science and engineering,” said Desraj, issuing a one-month “deadline” to the government.

He warned that if the vacant posts were not filled, the locals would be left with no choice but to take to the streets in protest.Current Dalhousie MLA DS Thakur said he raised the issue in the Assembly during the monsoon session, but the government had failed to take any remedial steps.

The MLA said he would again request the Chief Minister and the Education Minister to take steps in this direction soon.
