Himachal gets 49% less rain in June, highest deficit in Kangra, Hamirpur districts

Himachal Pradesh experienced a significant shortfall in rainfall during June, receiving 49 per cent less than the average expected for the month. From June 1 to 30, the state recorded just 51 mm of rain whereas the normal average for this period is 102.5 mm.
This deficit has sparked concern among farmers and orchardists who rely heavily on monsoon rains for their crops.
The districts of Hamirpur, Kangra, and Chamba were particularly affected, receiving very little rainfall. In contrast, Shimla and Solan saw some relief with slightly better precipitation.
The Meteorological Department had predicted below-normal rainfall for June across India and this prediction held true in varying degrees across Himachal Pradesh’s 12 districts.
Hamirpur and Kangra both recorded a 67 per cent rain shortfall. Bilaspur saw a reduction of 53.3 per cent in rainfall while Chamba experienced a 60 per cent deficit. Kinnaur had 61 per cent less rain and Kullu faced a 49 per cent deficit.
Lahaul-Spiti saw a 37 per cent reduction, Mandi 52 per cent, Shimla 19 per cent and Sirmaur 51 per cent. Solan experienced a 21 per cent deficit and Una saw 47 per cent less rainfall than normal.
Despite the overall deficit, the monsoon showed signs of picking up towards the end of June, bringing good rains to several districts, including Shimla. Comparatively, in 2023, by June 26, the state had recorded only 39.5 mm of rain, which was 53 per cent less than the normal 84.3 mm for that period.
