MANDI: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur has appealed to the state government to designate January 22 as a public holiday, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s similar request.
The consecration ceremony of Ram Temple in Ayodhya is scheduled to be held on January 22 and several BJP-ruled states have announced a holiday on that day. The Union Government too has declared a half-day for its staff.
Speaking to the media after initiating a cleanliness drive at ancient Ekadash Rudra Temple in Mandi on Saturday (January 20, 2024), Jai Ram conveyed that January 22 held historical significance for the people of the country. He underscored the excitement and pride felt by the public regarding the upcoming event, urging the government to declare a holiday in acknowledgment of public sentiment.
Jai Ram emphasised the enthusiasm and pride associated with this day, as people eagerly anticipate celebrating at temples and homes with grand Diwali events. Taking into account Prime Minister Modi’s suggestion, he expressed hope that the state government would declare a holiday, considering the sentiments of the people.
Furthermore, Jai Ram criticised the current government for borrowing without transparent expenditure, drawing a contrast with his tenure when loans were utilised for the state’s development. He pointed out the state’s record-breaking borrowing of Rs 14,000 crore in a mere 13 months, questioning the undisclosed allocation of these funds.
