Himachal cop turns ‘courier’ to deliver 1.5 kg charas in Haryana, arrested after tip-off

A constable of the Himachal Pradesh Police was arrested with charas at Karnal in Haryana, the development raising a question mark over the role of police personnel in countering the drug menace.

Identified as Sanjeev Kumar, the constable was caught with 1.5 kg of charas. He was posted at the Dharampur police station in Mandi district. The accused is a resident of Samkhetar locality (Mandi).

After the matter came to the fore, the Mandi police have also suspended Sanjeev. Additional Superintendent of Police Ashish Sharma has confirmed the suspension.
The anti-narcotics cell of the Karnal police has registered a case against the accused at Butana police station. Sanjeev was produced before a court, which sent him to judicial custody.

On the other hand, Sanjeev’s family members have claimed that he had been framed. According to information, Sanjeev went in a car towards Karnal wearing his uniform. In the meantime, someone reportedly alerted the Karnal police’s anti-narcotics cell a Himachal police constable had come to supply the contraband.

After this, the police interrogated Sanjeev in front of witnesses and searched his vehicle and found 1.5 kg of charas. Sanjeev allegedly was to supply charas to two persons and for this he was paid Rs 20,000.
