Shimla: Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has underscored the significant efforts Himachal Pradesh has made to preserve its green cover, urging the central government to provide financial incentives to the state as a reward for its environmental conservation initiatives.

Emphasising the state’s role in reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change, CM Sukhu argued that Himachal Pradesh’s eco-friendly policies and projects have not only benefitted the state but also contributed to India’s overall climate goals, a government spokesperson said in a statement.

“Himachal has taken substantial steps to protect its forests and biodiversity, which play a vital role in mitigating the impacts of climate change. It is only fair that the Centre recognises this contribution and supports us financially,” he said.

CM Sukhu highlighted initiatives like sustainable tourism, afforestation programs and policies discouraging deforestation, which have helped maintain Himachal’s lush forests despite pressures from development and increasing tourism.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the state’s green cover has been instrumental in offsetting carbon emissions produced by other regions, furthering India’s climate pledges under international agreements. He noted that the preservation of forest areas has come at a cost to state resources, and without central support, it is challenging to maintain this balance amid rising developmental demands.
