SHIMLA: In a move aimed at streamlining governance, optimising ministerial responsibilities as well as placating miffed ministers, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced the redistribution of several key departments among his cabinet colleagues.
Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil, a distinguished retired Colonel from the Army, has been entrusted with the Sainik Welfare department. The Labour and Employment portfolio, previously under the CM’s purview, has been reassigned to Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan.
Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi has been tasked with overseeing the critical Redressal of Public Grievances department, signalling a proactive approach to addressing citizen concerns.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur will now also oversee the Printing and Stationery department, while Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh has been given the additional responsibility for the Urban Development sector, reflecting the government’s emphasis on infrastructure development and educational reforms.
In a significant expansion of ministerial roles, Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani, a recent addition to the cabinet, will oversee both Town and Country Planning and Housing departments, highlighting the government’s focus on urban and rural development initiatives. Ayush Minister Yadvinder Goma assumes the pivotal role of overseeing the department of Law and Legal Remembrances, showcasing the administration’s commitment to legal frameworks and justice. Vikramaditya, Rohit and Harshwardhan were learnt to be miffed with the CM as they were stripped of portfolios during the recent cabinet expansion to accommodate Dharmani and Goma.
The reshuffle comes amidst reports of discontent among some ministers following recent changes in portfolio allocations. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu, who previously oversaw nearly two dozen departments, sought to assuage concerns by redistributing responsibilities among cabinet members.
Despite relinquishing certain departments, the Chief Minister retains key portfolios, including Finance, Home, Energy, Tourism, Forest, Civil Supplies and Excise and Taxation. With one cabinet vacancy remaining, speculation looms over potential appointments following the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, hinting at further adjustments in the state’s political landscape. The Chief Minister’s office affirmed that the redistribution of departments was aimed at enhancing accountability, fostering collaboration and driving inclusive development across the state.
