Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has convened a meeting of Congress MLAs in Shimla on Tuesday (April 16, 2024) afternoon to discuss the upcoming Lok Sabha poll and Assembly byelections.
The meeting will take place at his official residence Oak Over where CM Sukhu and instructions are learnt to have been issued to all MLAs to remain present. Sources said that each MLA will be tasked with securing a lead in the Lok Sabha elections. Additionally, in line with the strategy employed during the 2022 Assembly elections, each MLA will be expected to maintain or increase their margin of victory.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP held power in the state, they achieved a clean sweep, securing leads in all 68 Assembly seats of Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Sukhu aims to formulate a strategy to replicate this success by securing leads in most of the state’s Assembly seats.
The upcoming byelections on six Assembly seats, coupled with the Lok Sabha contest, are crucial for Chief Minister Sukhu’s credibility. Following the political crisis triggered by the Rajya Sabha election on February 27, the government cannot afford a resurgence of opposition activity against the Chief Minister. Winning both the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections is imperative to prevent such a scenario. Chief Minister Sukhu will also outline plans to showcase the achievements of the Congress government’s 15-month tenure to the public.
In today’s meeting, Chief Minister Sukhu may assign Congress MLAs election duties beyond their respective constituencies, allowing them to campaign in other areas. Furthermore, guidelines regarding crowd management at public meetings during the upcoming elections are expected to be provided.
