Himachal byelections: Pratibha says Independent MLAs betrayed mandate, voters will punish them

byelection nalagarh hamirpur

Himachal Pradesh Congress president and former MP Pratibha Singh has expressed strong confidence that her party would secure a decisive victory in all three Assembly byelections in the state.

According to her, the voter trends in Hamirpur, Dehra and Nalagarh overwhelmingly favour the Congress, reflecting a united effort by the people to bolster the Congress government in the state.

The bypolls have been necessitated following the resignation of Independent MLAs Ashish Sharma (Hamirpur), Hoshyar Singh (Dehra) and KL Thakur (Nalagarh), who subsequently joined the BJP, which has fielded them from their respective seats.

Pratibha said the party anticipates increasing its representation to 41 MLAs in the Assembly following the byelections. In a statement issued on Sunday (July 7, 2024), she emphasised that the BJP’s political strategies will not succeed in the state, holding the BJP fully accountable for the necessity of these by-elections.

She asserted that the BJP could not evade responsibility for the current political situation.

The former MP criticised the three former independent MLAs, accusing them of betraying the trust of their constituents. She asserted that these MLAs should apologise to the people for their actions, stating that they would not be forgiven by their voters.

She urged Congress workers to remain vigilant and fulfill their responsibilities with loyalty and honesty in the final days leading up to the election.

Highlighting the achievements of the Congress government in Himachal, she said the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for employees and the issuance of a Rs 1,500 honorarium for women showed the Congress was committed to public interest and has delivered on its promises.

She accused the BJP of attempting to mislead the public with false statements. She argued that the people were well aware of the BJP’s policies and intentions, condemning their efforts to destabilise the Congress government, which she described as an insult to the state’s democracy and public opinion.
