Himachal byelections: 2-day alert for heavy rain; 42 roads blocked across state

Monsoon rains continue to lash various parts of Himachal Pradesh, causing significant disruptions. The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a heavy rain alert for the next two days.
Landslides and debris have already resulted in the closure of vehicular traffic on 42 roads as of 10 am on Tuesday (July 9, 2024). Additionally, 121 power transformers are down and 48 water supply schemes are affected across the state.
The Meteorological Centre has predicted that the rain will persist until July 15 in many regions. A yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued for July 11 and 12. Despite the overcast conditions, several areas, including Shimla, experienced light sunshine today.
Rainfall statistics from various parts of the state highlight the intensity of the monsoon. Nadaun recorded 34.5 mm of rain, Bhabhanagar received 32.8 mm and Agahar 21.4 mm. Other significant measurements include Nagal Dam with 16.2 mm, Kasauli with 15 mm, Jogindernagar with 10 mm, Kotkhai with 8.1 mm and Olinda with 7.8 mm. Shimla itself recorded 4.4 mm of rainfall.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur districts for July 11 and 12. There are no alerts for Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts. Residents in the alerted districts are advised to take precautions against potential flooding and landslides.
Minimum temperatures recorded in major places reflect the cool monsoon climate. Shimla reported a minimum temperature of 16.6 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar 23.1, Bhuntar 21.2, Kalpa 20.5, Una 24.5, Nahan 24.1 and Keylong 12.2. Other notable temperatures include Palampur at 19.2 degrees, Solan at 21.5, Kangra at 23.2, Mandi at 23.7 and Bilaspur at 25.5 degrees Celsius.
