The monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly commenced on Tuesday (August 27, 2024) at 11 am, marking the beginning of a 10-day session that will extend until September 9.
The session, the sixth of the 14th Assembly, is expected to be marked by intense debates and disruptions, with the opposition likely to disrupt the question hour and create a ruckus on the opening day.
Key issues set to dominate the discussions include infrastructure concerns such as roads and bridges, the recent spate of natural disasters, rising crime rates, drug addiction and the controversial merger and closure of schools.
The session will see a total of 936 questions being raised, of which 640 have been designated as starred, necessitating oral responses from the Chief Minister and other ministers. The remaining 296 questions will be unstarred and will receive written replies.

A day before the session, the BJP convened a legislature party meeting to devise a strategy aimed at cornering the ruling Congress. In response, the Congress legislature party held a strategic meeting on Tuesday morning to prepare for a counteroffensive.
Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania confirmed the receipt of 936 questions from the members, which have been forwarded to the government as per legislative procedures. The questions primarily focus on the merger of schools, the aftermath of recent heavy rainfall and floods, natural calamities across the state, and the construction of roads and bridges.
Additional concerns include the Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for approved roads, the upgradation of colleges, schools, and health institutions, and the filling of vacant posts in various departments.
Other topics to be addressed include tourism, gardens, the supply of drinking water, the prevention of drug abuse among youth, rising criminal cases, solar energy initiatives, the transport system, and the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi.
Members have also raised key issues related to their respective constituencies through these questions. Furthermore, 7 pieces of information under Rule 62, 1 under Rule 63, 10 under Rule 101, 20 under Rule 130, and 4 under Rule 324 have been submitted by the members, all of which have been sent to the government for further action.
