MANDI: Life in the mountains poses many challenges, particularly during the rainy season. Amid the miseries of cloudbursts, flashfloods, landslides and related adversities, local heroes emerge who risk their lives to save others.
One such hero, Vishal Sood, also known as Shaily, demonstrated extraordinary bravery in Kullu on Thursday (August 1, 2024). In a daring rescue operation, Shaily plunged into the swollen Beas and single-handedly saved nine persons stranded on a small island created by the flooded river.
Shaily had received news of rising floodwater in Manali around 6.30 am. Acting swiftly, he alerted the authorities and rushed to the transport area near the river where truck drivers and transport workers reside. Upon arrival, Shaily found the situation dire — the river had breached a wall and inundated the area, trapping several persons asleep in their trucks.
The rescue operation commenced immediately. Despite the SDM’s call for an NDRF team, they could not arrive in time and the water level continued to rise. The fire department attempted a rescue, but their ladder fell short of reaching the stranded individuals.
Witnessing this, Shaily took a decisive action. He braved the raging waters, swimming across the turbulent river to deliver a large rope to the stranded group.
Displaying remarkable courage and strength, Shaily methodically rescued each person, including a disabled individual whom he carried on his shoulders to safety. The act of heroism is not an isolated incident for Shaily.
The Beas for him has been more than just a river; it has been a playground, a companion and a teacher since his childhood. Known for his fearless spirit, he has previously rescued numerous people from the river and has extensive experience in retrieving vehicles caught in floodwaters.
Growing up, he idolised his elder brother Mitu, a remarkable swimmer renowned for his prowess in the Beas. Mitu’s influence ignited a passion for swimming in Shaily, turning him into an excellent swimmer who could navigate the river’s challenging currents with ease.
In addition to his heroic deeds, Shaily is a bodybuilder and an accomplished cricketer. For the past 15 years, he has served as the vice-president of the Transport Union in Kullu.
An excellent sportsperson and a figure of inspiration, Shaily’s actions on that fateful day were not driven by the pursuit of fame or recognition. His bravery was a testament to his character, reflecting the values of courage, compassion, and community.
Shaily’s selfless bravery stands as a beacon of hope and an example of the indomitable spirit found in the mountain regions of India, says Rumit, a local resident.
“In a world where heroes are often celebrated for their accolades, Shaily stands out for his humility and valour. His story is a reminder that true heroes are those who act in the face of danger, not for glory, but for the sake of others. He is undoubtedly a hero,” adds Rumit.
