Heavy Snowfall Traps Over 1000 Vehicles Near Atal Tunnel Rohtang; Tourists Safely Rescued

Fresh snowfall on Monday near the south and north portals of the Atal Tunnel Rohtang caused difficulties for tourists visiting Lahaul. Around 1000 vehicles were stuck in the snow, with more than 6000 tourists among them. By the time the news was reported, approximately 3500 tourists had been safely evacuated.
The rescue operation for tourists and vehicles continued throughout the night. As tourists’ vehicles reached near the south portal of Atal Tunnel Rohtang from Lahaul, they started skidding amidst the snow. The Kullu district police team continued the rescue operation with determination amidst the heavy snowfall between the snow walls on Monday night to rescue the tourists.
It is worth mentioning that heavy snowfall occurred in various parts of Lahaul, including Atal Tunnel Rohtang, on Monday. As soon as the information was received, a team of Manali police reached Atal Tunnel Rohtang. Under the leadership of DSP Manali, the police rescue team evacuated vehicles.
DSP Manali KD Sharma said that vehicles got stuck due to heavy snowfall suddenly. Efforts were made to rescue the stranded vehicles in the freezing cold. There has been seven inches of fresh snowfall in the Dhundi area.
Due to the fresh snowfall, more than 1000 vehicles were stuck. Among them, 600 vehicles were trapped near the south portal of the Atal Tunnel Rohtang, including 3500 tourists who were safely rescued. The rescue operation by the police continued throughout the night to rescue the remaining vehicles and people.
