Heavy snowfall alert in Himachal Pradesh; cold wave grips 9 cities

Shimla: The possibility of heavy snowfall in Chamba, Kullu, Shimla, Mandi, Kangra, Lahaul, and Spiti has been forecast by the Meteorological department.

Yellow alerts have been issued for these regions. The department anticipates significant snowfall, posing potential challenges to roads, electricity, and water supply projects.

A 48-hour alert for heavy snowfall has been issued, with warnings of potential tree and power line disruptions due to winds and storms.

Director of the Meteorological department, Dr Surendra Pal, explained that an active western disturbance is affecting North West India, resulting in an induced cyclonic circulation over South-West Rajasthan and Pakistan. This disturbance is likely to bring light to moderate rainfall and snowfall to most places in the region from February 4 to February 5.

The state may witness disruptions in essential services such as water supply, electricity, traffic, etc., due to the anticipated snowfall and freezing temperatures. Local administrations have been advised to stay vigilant for the next 72 hours.

Temperature Drops Below Zero in Nine Cities

Temperatures have dropped below freezing in nine cities across the state, causing severe cold conditions. Significant changes have been observed, particularly in nighttime temperatures. Kukusumari recorded -8.1 degrees Celsius, Samdho -6.1 degrees, Kalpa -5.6 degrees, Narkanda -3.7 degrees, Dalhousie -3.1 degrees, Rekong Peo -2.6 degrees, Manali -1.8 degrees, Kufri -1.4 degrees, and Bharmaur -1.2 degrees Celsius.

Moreover, other cities in Himachal Pradesh have also experienced a substantial drop in temperatures. Shimla recorded 1.2 degrees Celsius, Dharamshala 3.2 degrees, Una 4.8 degrees, Nahan 6.3 degrees, Palampur 3.5 degrees, Solan 3.2 degrees, Kangra 6 degrees, Mandi 3.4 degrees, Bilaspur 5.9 degrees, and Paonta Sahib 9 degrees Celsius.
