Heavy Rainfall Alert in Himachal Pradesh: Landslides and Road Closures Impact Transportation

Weather Warning Issued for Himachal Pradesh
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a heavy rainfall alert for some parts of Himachal Pradesh over the next two days. According to the weather department, light rain is expected to continue across several areas in the state until September 8. A yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall on September 2 and 3 in select regions.
Recent Rainfall Data
On Sunday night, significant rainfall was recorded in various locations across Himachal Pradesh: Nahan received 143.5 mm, Shri Naina Devi 130.6 mm, Pachhad 83.0 mm, Paonta Sahib 72.6 mm, Kataula 55.1 mm, Dhaula Kuan 66.0 mm, Sundernagar 46.2 mm, Pandoh 34.0 mm, Chamba 33.0 mm, Bharmour 32.0 mm, Dharamshala 13.2 mm, Palampur 30.0 mm, Mandi 19.2 mm, and Neri 21.0 mm. On Monday morning, Shimla also experienced light rainfall.
Landslides and Road Closures
Landslides have been reported in various parts of the state, including a significant one on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway near Nine Mile in Mandi. This has disrupted vehicle movement, causing major traffic congestion. As of 10:00 AM on Monday, 110 roads, including one national highway, remain closed due to landslides. Additionally, 427 electricity transformers are currently affected, causing power outages in several regions. The most impacted areas include Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, Kullu, and Kangra districts.

The minimum temperatures recorded across different regions of Himachal Pradesh are as follows: Shimla 16.6°C, Sundernagar 21.6°C, Bhuntar 22.1°C, Kalpa 15.5°C, Dharamshala 20.0°C, Una 23.4°C, Nahan 23.1°C, Keylong 13.6°C, Palampur 19.0°C, Solan 20.6°C, Manali 19.2°C, Kangra 22.4°C, Mandi 22.1°C, Bilaspur 25.0°C, Chamba 22.6°C, Dalhousie 14.9°C, Kukumseri 11.8°C, Dhaula Kuan 23.0°C, Barthin 24.9°C, Samdo 17.7°C, Kasauli 19.0°C, Paonta Sahib 24.0°C, Sarahan 18.5°C, Dehra Gopipur 24.0°C, Tabo 14.0°C, Mashobra 16.2°C, Neri 16.2°C, and Sainj 21.2°C.
Floods and Cloudbursts: A Grim Toll
According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, the monsoon season has seen tragic consequences with 64 reported deaths due to landslides, floods, and cloudbursts. Additionally, 30 people are still missing.
Overall, 271 individuals have lost their lives due to weather-related incidents and other accidents this season, with 423 people injured. The deaths include 23 due to cloudbursts, 26 from drowning and being swept away by floods, six from landslides, eight from flood-related incidents, and one due to lightning.
There have also been 25 snakebite deaths, 15 due to electric shocks, and 38 from falls. Rain-induced road accidents have claimed 120 lives, and nine deaths are attributed to other causes.
