Heatwave grips Himachal: Temperature soars to 45 degrees Celsius in Una, it’s above 40 in nine other cities

heatwave redalert

The scorching heat has now made its presence felt even in the usually cool mountains of Himachal Pradesh, with temperatures in nine cities crossing the 40 degrees Celsius mark.

This unprecedented heatwave has worsened the conditions in the plains, leading to widespread discomfort and health warnings. The temperature in Una has soared to a staggering 45 degrees Celsius, marking one of the highest recorded in the state.

Similar conditions are being experienced in the lower areas of Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Mandi, Sirmaur and Solan districts. The temperature in many cities has increased by up to 7 degrees Celsius above the normal range.

Hamirpur has seen the most significant rise, with temperatures increasing by 6.8 degrees Celsius compared to the seasonal average. Mandi follows closely with an increase of 6.7 degrees, Shimla 4.6 degrees, Sundarnagar 5.6 degrees, Bhuntar 5.4 degrees, Kalpa 4.1 degrees, Una 5.9 degrees and Nahan by 5 degrees.

While the heatwave persists, relief is on the horizon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a western disturbance (WD) is becoming active from Wednesday (May 29, 2024).

This weather phenomenon is expected to bring light rain to the high-altitude areas today, with more extensive rainfall anticipated in high and medium-altitude regions on May 30 and 3. A broader forecast predicts rain across most parts of Himachal Pradesh by June 1, which is likely to bring much-needed respite from the intense heat.

In response to the heatwave, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for all districts excluding Chamba, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. Local residents and tourists have been advised to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
