MANDI: In December 2021, Himachal Pradesh cricket created history by winning the prestigious Vijay Hazare Trophy under the leadership of head coach Anuj Pal Das. Now, in the first phase of the Ranji Trophy, the Himachal Pradesh team has continued their remarkable form, defeating Uttarakhand by an innings and 97 runs. With this victory, Anuj Pal Das has set his sights on taking the team even further.
4 centuries propel Himachal to massive total
In their match against Uttarakhand, the Himachal team, rejuvenated and ready to face the challenges of the Ranji Trophy, posted a mammoth score of 663. Four batsmen stood out by hitting centuries, showcasing the depth of the team’s batting lineup.
Ankit Kalsi led with an outstanding double century (205), while Shubham Arora (118), Prashant Chopra (171) and Ankait Sen (101) also contributed crucial centuries, solidifying the team’s dominance. Himachal’s next challenge will be against Rajasthan, with the match scheduled to take place from October 18 to 21 in Dharamshala.

Coach guiding Himachal to success
Hailing from Bilaspur, Anuj Pal Das is now in his second stint as the head coach of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA). Under his mentorship, Himachal cricket has reached new heights. His experience and leadership were pivotal in the team’s triumph in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2021 and he continues to be a key figure in the team’s rise.
Anuj Pal Das’ love for cricket started early. The son of businessman Rajendra Pal Das and Santosh Das, he began playing cricket at just 10 years of age, with his journey beginning in Mandi district. Known as Himachal’s “Little Master”, Anuj was a right-handed batsman who played in the Ranji Trophy.

In his first coaching stint, he served as coach of the India team in the 2008 Deodhar Trophy, which featured cricket legends like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Ishant Sharma, Aakash Chopra and Gautam Gambhir.
Upcoming matches and further challenges
After their victory against Uttarakhand, the Himachal team is now gearing up for their next match against Rajasthan in Dharamshala. They will also face Andhra Pradesh in Visakhapatnam from October 26 to 29, followed by Vidarbha in Nagpur from November 6 to 9 and Puducherry in Dharamshala from November 13 to 16. Amidst these fixtures, the Himachal team will also participate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Anuj Pal Das credits the team’s success not only to the players’ hard work but also to the modern facilities provided by the HPCA. He emphasised that it’s the teamwork of the players and support staff that has allowed the team to excel in both national and regional competitions.
