From Scalpel to Canvas: Dr. Om Mahendru’s Artistic Renaissance

Mandi — Dr. Om Mahendru, a renowned surgeon and COVID-19 veteran, is redefining his legacy through art after retiring in 2005. The 77-year-old from Mandi, who dedicated his life to saving lives in the operating room, has since created over 150 paintings, showcasing a remarkable transition from medicine to creative expression.

Dr. Mahendru’s artistic journey ignited during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic while he was serving at IIT Mandi. One night, inspired by the struggles of the world, he envisioned the pandemic as a solitary ship lost at sea.

This vision compelled him to pick up a paintbrush for the first time in decades, marking the beginning of his exploration into art. His inaugural painting, completed in a single overnight session, received rave reviews and encouraged him to pursue his newfound passion.

Since then, Dr. Mahendru has produced a diverse body of work, reflecting themes from life and imagination. Recently, he showcased 101 of his paintings at a two-day exhibition during the Indian Medical Association (IMA) conference in Mandi. Attendees, including fellow medical professionals, were captivated by the depth and creativity of his pieces, finding inspiration in the transformation of a healer into an artist.

Beyond exhibitions, Dr. Mahendru’s artwork has also gained recognition in literary circles; one of his pieces was selected for the cover of Dr. Ganga Ram Raji’s book, Mero Dard Na Janey Koi, which illustrates a poignant tale from Himachali folklore.

Dr. Mahendru emphasizes that a doctor is not merely a healer but also a creator. He hopes his story inspires others to explore their passions, regardless of age. “Creativity should be expressed, not suppressed,” he states, advocating for the pursuit of artistic endeavors alongside professional duties.

At 77, Dr. Mahendru’s spirit remains youthful and vibrant, with each brushstroke reflecting a lifetime of wisdom. His artistic journey serves as a powerful reminder that creativity knows no bounds, transforming his legacy into a dual narrative of medicine and art. As he continues to paint, he embodies the notion that one can always embrace new beginnings, making him a true renaissance man of our time.
