The picturesque Atal Tunnel at Rohtang, located in the lap of the mighty Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh, has become a favourite destination for foreign tourists.
Over the years, the number of domestic tourists visiting the region has been increasing sharply. The craze for the Atal Tunnel remains intact among foreign guests as well. The number of foreign tourists visiting Lahaul valley via the Atal Tunnel increased significantly last year.
In 2021, only 345 foreign tourists visited Lahaul valley via Atal Tunnel. However, in 2022, the number of foreign tourists visiting Lahaul increased to 5,377. This year, the number of foreign guests is expected to increase even further. Foreign tourists are visiting the Atal Tunnel after staying in Manali and then reaching the tourist spots of Lahaul, including Sissu, Koksar, Trilokinath, Mrikula Mata Temple and other places. The Atal Tunnel has made it easy for foreign tourists to reach the Lahaul valley throughout the year, including winter.
Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Mayank Chaudhary said the police had made adequate efforts to maintain law and order in the district.
“The scenic beauty of Atal Tunnel and the Lahaul valley has captivated foreign tourists and they are enjoying the atmosphere in the region. The Lahaul valley is now connected to the world throughout the year, thanks to the Atal Tunnel. The increase in foreign tourist arrivals is a positive sign for the tourism industry of Himachal,” says Suresh Kardo, a Lahaul resident.
