MANDI: Former four-term Nachan MLA and veteran Congress leader Tek Chand Dogra breathed his last on Saturday morning following a brief hospitalisation. He was 77.
A tall leader in Himachal Pradesh’s politics, Dogra held several positions throughout his illustrious career, serving as MLA four times and once as Chief Parliamentary Secretary. Known for his dedication to public service, he chaired both the Milk Federation and the SC/ST Development Corporation, leaving an indelible mark on the state’s socio-economic landscape.
A loyalist of late six-term Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, Dogra’s influence extended beyond political circles, earning him the moniker ‘Hanuman of Virbhadra Singh’ in Mandi district. He played a pivotal role in the Congress, serving as its district president in Sundernagar and later as the party’s vice-president.
A wave of grief swept across the political spectrum with leaders such as Mandi MP Pratibha Singh, PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh and former minister Kaul Singh Thakur expressing their condolences.
Former Chief Minister and BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur also expressed grief over Dogra’s demise. He acknowledged the former MLA’s significant contributions to the region’s development. “Dogra’s passing away has left a void in Himachal Pradesh’s politics. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his bereaved family as we bid farewell to a towering figure,” said Jai Ram.
Dogra had won his first Assembly election from Nachan constituency in Mandi district in 1985 on the Congress ticket. He lost to BJP’s Dile Ram in 1990, but won the three next consecutive terms in 1993, 1998 and 2003. He lost the 2007 and 2012 elections to BJP’s Dile Ram and Vinod Kumar and wasn’t fielded by the Congress after that.
