MANDI: The pace of debris and rock removal along the Mandi-Pandoh National Highway (NH) has raised serious concerns among stakeholders as the work progresses at a sluggish pace. Violating green norms, the construction company has resorted to dumping debris directly into the Beas river, drawing criticism from environmentalists and local authorities alike.

While the administration has assured of continuous monitoring, the lack of proactive measures to halt such practices by the company underscores a glaring oversight. The repercussions of this tardiness could reverberate into the upcoming tourism season, potentially impeding the flow of visitors to the region.

Efforts from both the administration and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have been relentless, yet the lackadaisical approach of the company management persists, despite ongoing discussions and directives for improvement. Instances of accumulated debris and loose rocks between Mandi and Pandoh have not only posed logistical challenges for authorities but also raised safety concerns for commuters. Incidents have already been reported, necessitating urgent action before the onset of monsoon and peak tourist influx.

Raj Shekhar, Project Manager, KMC, when contacted, said, “The imminent threat posed by hanging rocks underscores the urgency for controlled blasting and removal, a process currently underway. However, the complexity of the task and the need for precision are causing unavoidable delays, exacerbating the situation.”

In response to commuter inconvenience, adjustments have been made to evening shift timings and alternative routes are being explored to mitigate disruptions. Public feedback has played a pivotal role in shaping these decisions, reaffirming the commitment to prioritize public welfare, he added.

Residents and stakeholders are urging the concerned company to expedite debris removal to ensure the seamless operation of the upcoming tourism season. The efficacy of current efforts remains in question, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance and accountability. As the region grapples with these challenges, timely intervention from authorities and concerted efforts from all stakeholders will be imperative in restoring normalcy along the Mandi-Pandoh NH, ensuring the safety and convenience of all travellers.
