SHIMLA: A successful knee replacement of two patients was done through robotic surgery at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital in Himachal Pradesh capital city Shimla. The surgeons leading the task were from outside Himachal and they made other doctors aware of the intricacies of the operation by conducting the procedure live.
This type of knee replacement has been done for the first time in Himachal Pradesh.Gaura Devi (64) of Galukhurad village of Shimla district and Ganga Ram (69) of Bagi village had come to the IGMC recently after suffering from knee pain.
When the doctors of the ortho department examined them, they found that both their knees would have to be replaced. After this, the treatment of both was started.On Friday (September 8, 2023), Dr Narendra Vaidya of Lokmanya Hospital, Pune, and Dr Shubhang Aggarwal of Jalandhar, along with a team of doctors from the IGMC, completed the knee replacement process within three hours.
Dr Manoj Thakur, head of the IGMC orthopedic department, said that the Himachal chapter of the Indian Orthopedic Association also explained the intricacies of implants to the doctors of the hospital through the annual conference of robotic technology. After the operation, both the patients were doing fine and would be discharged from the hospital within 10 to 12 days, he said.
